When visiting Colorado's Rocky Mountains, hiking is one of the must-do activities as there are so many interesting sites and scenes to be found off the beaten trail(s). While Pike's Peak, Colorado's state parks, & Garden of the Gods are some of the big area draws, if you are ready to step away from the tourist crowds and check out some Colorado history, there are many ghost town and ghost mine hikes that give the true flavor of Colorado's rich mining history.
Within an hour of Bristlecone Lodge is one of the easier ghost mine hikes in which you can experience the history of gold mining that made Victor and Cripple Creek famous in the late 1800's. This easy 2 mile trail ranges between ~9,000 and 10,000 ft in altitude and is a great day hike with kids and dogs on leash. This area, which used to be home to over 50k miners and gold rush seekers, is now a testament to the freedom and beauty of Colorado. The many stops along will keep hikers interested with details of each mine along the trail.
It's easily accessible from Colorado highway 81 between the towns of Independence and Victor, CO and the drive both in and out of the area take you around Pikes Peak and promise wonderful mountain and valley views. Take Highway 24 6.8 miles west to Divide, then South on 67 towards Cripple Creek. Enjoy the 13.1 mile drive on CO-67 as it winds past Mueller State Park, through Midland and around the western side of Pikes Peak, Sheep and Cow mountains. Turn left onto CO Rd 81/Lazy S Ranch Rd. and continue 5.6 miles just before the sleepy town of Goldfield. The Vindicator Valley trail head will be on the right.
If you've enjoyed this trail, be sure and share your hiking photos with us on our Google page.
